Payne Lowers NCAA Division III Record in 200 Breaststroke -- January 30, 2006

WILLIAMSTOWN, Massachusetts, January 30. SENIOR Lindsay Payne set a national, pool and New England Small College Athletic Conference record in the 200 breaststroke Saturday as the Williams College women's swimming and diving team ended the dual meet portion of its season with a 185-113 win over Middlebury.

The Ephs improved to 6-1 on the season as Payne and Amanda Nicholson each won three events on the day. The highlight of the day came when Payne won the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.20, breaking her own Division III national mark of 2:16.40, set one year ago. Payne was also triumphant in the 200 free (1:53.15) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.74) while Nicholson posted victories in the 100 back (1:01.22), the 500 free (5:11.66) and the 400 IM (4:32.64).

"To break a national record any time is impressive, but to do it in a dual meet makes it that much more impressive," said Ephs head coach Steve Kuster. "It was just a great swim. I thought she had a great first half, and the second half was even better. She swam it the way we've talked about swimming it."
