LONG BEACH, California, March 3. CALIFORNIA jumped out to an early day-one lead at the Pacific 10 Championships held in Long Beach, Calif. Cal finished the first night of relay-only action with 72 points, while Southern California stood second with 70 points. Stanford rounded out the top three with 68 points.
Cal's team of Guy Barnea, Damir Dugonjic, Graeme Moore and Josh Daniels won the men's 200-yard medley relay with a 1:24.85, while Stanford's Eugene Godsoe, Curtis Lovelace, Alex Coville and David Dunford took second with a 1:25.25. Arizona's Bryan O'Connor, Marcus Titus, Jordan Slaughter and Jordan Smith finished third in 1:25.62. All three top times cleared the NCAA A cut.
USC held off Stanford and Cal in the men's 800 free relay. The USC quartet of Clement Lefert, Patrick White, James Martin and Zoltan Povazsay won in 6:19.17. Stanford's Godsoe, Bobby Bollier, David Mosko and Rob Andrews took second in 6:19.52. Cal's Nathan Adrian, Moore, Ben Hinshaw and Tom Shields clocked a 6:19.79 for third. Again, all top three squads posted NCAA A cut times.
