NEWARK, Delaware, March 10. NINE state records were erased from the books at the Delaware High School State Championships in Newark.
Girls Results
Charter School won two of three relays. Bryn Crowder, Katherine Rechsteiner, Shannon Foreman, and Annie Nunes won the 200 medley relay (1:47.37).
Nunes, a freshman, set a state record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.91. The previous record (51.40) was set by Kayla Andrews (Charter School) in 2006.
Nicole Vernon (Tatnall) was a dual event winner in the 200 and 500 freestyles. She clocked times of 1:50.01 and 4:51.39, respectively.
Charter's Katherin Rechsteiner set a state record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.58. The previous record (1:04.00) was set by Katie Kuczmarski (St. Mark's) in 2002. She teamed up with Jill Faull, Nunes and Foreman for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.10).
Top finishers in the diving competition include Katie Lounsbury (Tatnall) (333.85), Leah Hatkevich (331.90) (duPont) and Katie Parks (duPont) (294.90).
Tatnall's Kaitlyn Jones had individual wins in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke (55.57). She set a state record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.60. The previous record (2:03.52) was set by Erin Mulshenock (Padua Academy) in 1998. Jones teamed up with Brittany Coffin, Vernon, and Megan Northshield for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:38.52).
Boys Results
Salesianum won two of three relays. Zack Pryor, Alex Hampel, Clifton Gordon, and Michael Wanner won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.40.
Gordon set a state record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.08. The previous record (49.12) was set by Mt. Pleasant's Christopher Brady in 2006.
Brandywine's Tommy McKee was a dual event winner in the 200 and 100 freestyles. He clocked times of 1:41.49 and 47.20, respectively.
Senior Eric Materniak (Tatnall) had individual wins in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke (58.17). He set a state record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.32. The previous record (1:52.49) was set in 2007 by Peter Koppel (Archmere Academy).
Tanner Kurz (Delaware Military Academy) set state records in the 50 freestyle (20.40) and the 100 backstroke (50.29). The previous records (20.85 and 50.38) were set by Newark's Grady Carter in 2006 and Marc Lindsay (St. Mark's) in 1998, respectively. T. Kurz teamed up with Toby Berry, Adam Keup and Seth Kurz for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.57).
Greg Miraglia (Wilimington Friends) won the diving competition with 381.30 points. John Gravatt (Salesianum) and Miles Comaskey (A.I. du Pont) followed with scores of 341.00 and 305.75, respectively.
Sean Minderlein (Salesianum) won the 500 freestyle (4:36.29). He teamed up with Matthew Tankle, Adam Sosnowik and Gordon for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:15.68).
